The cold and humid weather increases your risk of cough, cold and dry skin. Before you plan to consult a doctor for these and other common winter conditions, try these simple and effective natural remedies.
Camphor for joint pain: Add one big piece of camphor in a cup of hot coconut oil and let it melt. Apply this oil on the joints daily to reduce swelling and relieve joint pain. Camphor also exerts cooling effect and reduces irritation and muscle aches along with improving blood circulation.
Mishri for cough: Commonly used in Ayurvedic preparations, mishri clears cough by loosening the mucus and relieves a sore throat. For effective results, place a piece of mishri in your mouth and allow it to melt (don't chew). You can take it twice a day.
(PS-Mishri refers to crystallized sugar lumps, and type of confectionery mineral, which has its origins in India and Persia, also known as rock sugar elsewhere.)
Turmeric Milk for sore throat: Add half a teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of black pepper powder to a cup of boiling milk and drink it twice a day. The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric provide relief from sore throat.
Ginger tea for headache: The volatile oils in ginger act as powerful painkillers and help you to beat headache. All you need to do is add a crushed piece of ginger and some tea leaves in a cup of boiling water and drink it warm to get rid of headache.
Fennel seeds for indigestion: During winters your ability to digest food decreases and this is the reason why most people suffer from indigestion. However, chewing few fennel seeds after meals or drinking a glass of warm fennel seed decoction during the day aids in digestion.
Aloe vera for dry/itchy skin: The sudden drop in the temperature and humidity during winters might lead to dry and itchy skin. To deal with this, apply aloe vera gel on the affected area to reduce skin irritation. Its moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties do the trick!
Steam inhalation for blocked nose: Add few drops of eucalyptus oil to a vessel of boiling water and inhale the steam. The steam moistens the nasal passage and expels phlegm relieving nasal congestion. Do this two times a day.
Onion seeds for asthma: According to a study published in the Journal Phytomedicine, onion seeds contain thymoquinone, a compound that overcomes asthmatic symptoms. Crush few seeds and mix it with water or milk and drink it regularly.
Hot compress for ear pain: Ear pain caused due to cold and throat infections can be effectively dealt with hot fomentation, says Dr Gauri Belsare, head of ENT department, Ruby Hall Clinic. To do this, dip a hand towel in hot water, squeeze out excess water and place it over the ear.
