It’s summer time! For children, it is just the start of an exciting and fun summer vacation. Though parents want their kids to make the most of their holidays, they are always concerned about their child’s safety and health.
Drink plenty of water: Excess heat during summer causes dehydration which leads to weakness. It is important for children to stay hydrated in summer with water, lime juice and fruit juices that help instantly recharge the body’s lost fluids. Also, children should have at least 8-10 glasses of water a day and even when they are not thirsty. This helps keep dehydration at bay and rejuvenates their exhausted body.
Wear loose, cotton clothes: Encourage children to wear light-colored fabrics covering exposed areas to keep their body cool and protect their skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Children could also wear a cap with a brim to protect their head from the sun.
Apply sunscreen and insect repellent: In summers, children should apply sunscreen first followed by the insect repellent on their skin. They should apply a water-resistant sunscreen (at least SPF 30) 15 to 30 minutes before venturing into the open, to protect themselves from both UVA and UVB rays. They should also apply insect repellents to avoid insect bites that can cause infections and rashes.
Eat light, small, frequent meals and include salad in your diet: With so much vigor required to play and enjoy, it is important for children to have healthy, nutritious food during summers for their daily boost of energy. Children should have sweet, juicy fruits for breakfast and consume lots of seasonal fruits such as peaches, plums, melons and pears. They should also avoid red meat during summers and include salads in their diet as fruits and leafy vegetables contain significant amounts of water which has a cooling effect on the body.
