It is hard to know what is in season anymore. Food is shipped long distances from where it is grown to be available in supermarkets everywhere. With food packaging and processing techniques, we can now have our favourite foods year-long. However, this convenience doesn’t come without a cost.
Eating foods out of season means paying a premium for transportation from long distances, and food is almost guaranteed not to be fresh. Most of the food would have been picked early, and allowed to ripen during transport, meaning that it is lacking vital nutrients and freshness. Not only that, but the energy and emissions needed to grow and transport these foods from their place of origin to your table are quite large.
Eating foods that are in season ensures that you get the most nutrient rich foods for the most economical prices. Eating seasonally also supports your local economy, and helps return you to nature’s natural rhythms. Autumn is a time where the harvest is plenty, are there are a variety of nutrient dense delicious foods available to you.
With the change of the weather to cooler temperatures, more warming, autumn harvest foods are abundant, including carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, onions, garlic, apples, cucumbers, peaches, and watermelon. The addition of warming spices such as ginger, curry, and pepper will also help warm you up.
